Feast of St. Andrew
The patronal feast of St. Andrew is celebrated every Nov. 30 and June 27, the anniversary of the miracle performed by the saint who saved the city from attack by sea by the Saracens.
In the festivities, the statue of the saint is carried in procession through the city to the beach and then rushed up the steps of the Cathedral, carried on the shoulders of about 60 official bearers (plus the support of all Amalfitans). These events are complemented by a parade of local bands through the city, festively decorated for the occasion with illuminations and fireworks that conclude the evening
Byzantine New Year
The Byzantine New Year is the annual historical recreation, which falls on September 1, of the Palio pageant of the Ancient Maritime Republics. More than 100 figures, chosen from among the townspeople, parade between the town of Amalfi and the nearby town of Atrani in period costumes, recalling classes and roles that characterized the Republic in the Middle Ages. At Atrani, in the presence of the archbishop, there is the ceremony of the investiture of the Magister of Amalfi Civilization, conferred annually on a personality, either born in Amalfi or adopted, who has distinguished himself or herself for merits in one of the outstanding areas of medieval Amalfi civilization.
Historical Regatta of the Maritime Republics
The Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics is a historical sporting event reenacting the rivalry of the historic Maritime Republics-Amalfi, Pisa, Genoa and Venice. Since 1955 the event has been held on the first weekend of June in turns in these four cities. The galleon race (with men’s crews often even at Olympic level) is preceded by a historical parade with figurants from each town in period dress and the mixed gozzo race for local young athletes.
